District Institutes of Education and Training (DIET)s were set up as institutes at the district level after the National Policy of Education,1986 in approx. 500 districts of India for universalisation of elementary education and to improve quality of elementary education. Pre-service teacher education and in-service teacher training are major responsibilities of all DIETs.

District Institute of Education and Training, DIETs in Delhi are run by Govt. of Delhi, conduct a two-year Diploma in Elementary Teacher Education where most students are senior secondary pass outs at entry level. They are from all streams of +2 educations, heterogeneous in terms of culture, language and intellectual level etc. There are 120 students at DIET, central district, Delhi. They get absorbed as primary teachers with Delhi Govt. after the two-year programme.District Institute of Education and Training (DIET), Daryaganj, establihed on July 1994 as a Centrally Sponsored Scheme of Government of India, Ministry of Human Resource Development, under the administrative control of State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), Delhi, as an apex body at the state level. It has been established as a pace setting institution with the objective to bring qualitative and quantitative enrichment in elementary, adult and non-formal education in the Central district, through conduction of research, experiments, training, materialdevelopment and providing resource support. Since its establishment, DIET Darya Ganj is constantly engaged in achieving these objectives.


DIET Daryaganj is placed in a historical building, which earlier used to be Irwin Hospital having VIP wards. In 1958, it started functioning as the first Teacher Training Institute in Delhi, which was inaugurated by none other than the Father of Nation, Mahatma Gandhi. In 1975, the Nursery Teacher Training Course for women was started in this building.


This is an institute that captures the multi-faceted personality of the elementary education visionaries. The institute performs a wide range of academic activities with the idea of development of a complete personality, self-discipline, spirit of co-operation, innovative ideas, scientific temper and missionary zeal which are the necessary part of studies. The institute is being run with the initial in-take of 120 students, including 20 seats for Urdu Teaching of Diploma in Elementary Teacher Education.


DIET, central is responsible for the Best Practices by designing a yearly calendar for ensuring planned work in the area of planning, training, research and material development and also conducting the programmes as planned, DIET also provides academic resources input for the Dstrict authorities and state Departments

DIET regularly conducts pre-service and in-service programme for Heads of schools and teachers working in the Central District of Delhi. The whole process of in-service training is carried out in a very scientific manner with the close cooperation of the DIET faculty and the Department of Education – MCD and Directorate of Education, GNCT of Delhi. At present all the following seven branches are fully functional:

  •  In-service, Field interaction, Innovation and Co-ordination (IFIC) Branch

  • Work Experience (WE) Branch

  • Education Technology (ET) Branch 

  • Planning and Management (P&M) Branch 

  • Curriculum, Material Development and Evaluation (CMDE) Branch

  • District Resource Unit (DRU ) Branch
